Vieux Grand Port: Dutch fort ruins & museum walk
A short walk through the first European settlement of the island: the ruins of the Dutch Fort Frederik Hendrik (1638), its small museum and the bay where the Dutch landed.
In 1638 the Dutch built Fort Frederik Hendrik at Vieux Grand Port, the first settlement of Mauritius, as a refreshment station for their East India ships; they abandoned it in 1710. In a park by the church you can walk among the ruins of the fort (church, bakery, prison, forge, powder magazine), with a small museum showing clay pipes, bottles and the story of the Dutch on the island.
From there, a short walk along the coast road leads to the monument of the first Dutch landing in 1598. About 2 hours in all (β 3 km each way), easy.
