Île d'Ambre, off the north-east coast, is wild and uninhabited: mangrove channels, a calm lagoon and forest with ruins from around 1750. Guided kayak tours (half day) paddle around the island and into the mangroves, stopping to snorkel among the roots, where juvenile fish hide, and to walk to the ruins.

Peaceful and off the beaten track; beginners are welcome.
