In 1744 the French ship Saint-Géran sank on the reef off Poudre d'Or. The shipwreck inspired Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's novel 'Paul et Virginie' (1788), one of the best-known stories of the island. A small monument on the shore faces the reef and Île d'Ambre.
