On the wild coast near L'Escalier, there's no reef: the ocean hammers the black basalt. Start at Savinia, a hidden little beach in a green cove, then walk east along the rocky shore to Le Souffleur, where waves are forced through a hole in the rock and shoot up in spray, and on (about 1 km) to the Pont Naturel, a natural arch with the sea surging underneath.

About 3 km each way on rough rock and grass. Getting there is part of the adventure: the access is a long, partly unpaved track through the cane fields of the Savinia estate (from L'Escalier), easier with a 4×4 or a high car. Fit walkers can continue east along the coast towards Le Bouchon and the wild beach of La Cambuse (the full coastal route is about 12 km).

  • Le Souffleur blowhole
  • The Pont Naturel sea arch
  • Hidden Savinia beach
