Pointe du Diable battery
Ruins of an 18th-century French battery on a wild headland of the east coast, with old cannons pointing at the reef pass.
The French built the Pointe du Diable battery around 1750 to guard the reef passes of the Grand Port bay. Its stone walls and a few cannons still stand on the rocky headland, facing Γle aux Fouquets and the breaking waves. The name ('Devil's Point') supposedly comes from sailors whose compasses went haywire here.
A quiet, windswept stop on the coast road between MahΓ©bourg and the east coast.
