Le Morne Brabant (556 m) is a basalt monolith at the south-west tip of the island. In the 18th and 19th centuries escaped slaves (maroons) hid in its caves and on its summit, which is why it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The hike has two parts. Section 1 is a wide, gradual path through the forest to a first viewpoint (about 45–60 minutes). Section 2 is steep and rocky, with some scrambling using your hands, up to the cross viewpoint at about 470 m and the summit plateau. The view over the lagoon, Le Morne peninsula and the coral reef is one of the best in the Indian Ocean.

The trail is managed by the Le Morne Heritage Trust Fund. The upper section and the true summit are only accessible with a registered guide.

  • 360Β° view over the lagoon and Le Morne peninsula
  • UNESCO site of the maroons (escaped slaves)
  • Endemic plants on the lower trail

πŸ“ Where it starts
At the south-east foot of the mountain, on the Le Morne road at the entrance of the peninsula: the signposted 'Le Morne Brabant Hiking' trailhead (a gate with a small hut where the Trust Fund registers hikers). Small car park, often full after 8:00; otherwise park along the road nearby (the public beach is 2 km away).
🧭 The route
Section 1 (45–60 min): a wide, stony track, then a path climbing gently through dry forest and savannah grass to the first viewpoint, already with a great view over the lagoon and Île aux BΓ©nitiers. Section 2 (45 min, guide only): a steep, rocky climb where you use your hands on rock steps, with a few exposed ledges, up to the cross viewpoint (β‰ˆ 470 m) and the summit plateau. You come back the same way.
πŸͺ¨ Terrain
Stony track, then bare rock with steep steps; polished and slippery when wet.
πŸ‘οΈ Views
The first viewpoint is at mid-height (lagoon and Île aux Bénitiers); the big panorama, with the 'underwater waterfall' reef below, is at the cross.
πŸŒ… Best light
Start at 7:00 (the gate opens then): morning light on the lagoon, and no shade higher up.
🚧 Obstacles
  • Rock steps where you use your hands (section 2, with a guide)
  • Exposed ledges
πŸͺ’ Ropes
No fixed ropes; the guide helps on the steepest rock steps.
πŸ” Loop?
No loop: same way up and down.
🦟 Insects
Few mosquitoes (dry forest). Flies can be annoying at the top in summer.
πŸ’§ Water
No water on the trail. Buy water before; there are shops in Le Morne village.
πŸ‘₯ Crowds
Busy at weekends and in high season, with guided groups from 7:00. Quieter on weekday mornings.
πŸ“Ά Phone signal
Good mobile coverage almost everywhere.

Getting there

Driving route from the villa

πŸš— By car: 25 min (15.8 km) off-peak. Small car park at the 'Le Morne Brabant Hiking' trailhead on the Le Morne road, at the south-east foot of the mountain (arrive early), or along the road nearby. Directions in Google Maps β†—

Tips

  • πŸ’‘ Start at 7:00 to avoid the heat; there is almost no shade on the upper section.
  • πŸ’‘ Wear shoes with grip: the rocks are polished and slippery when wet.
  • πŸ’‘ Section 2 has exposed drops: not for anyone with vertigo.
