Le Réduit (State House)
The French colonial château of 1749, now the President's residence, in a park above a river gorge: open to the public only on a few days a year.
Le Réduit was built in 1749 as a retreat and fortress by the French governor Barthélemy David, and became the residence of the British governors and, since 1992, of the President of the Republic. The white château stands in a large park with centuries-old trees, ending at a viewpoint over the ravine.
It opens to the public only on a few special days (often around National Day in March or a spring open day): check the news before your trip.
